To explore the specificity of one of these systems (STRmix ™ ), we conducted an extensive study using 24 complex mixtures: all were known or apparent 4-person mixtures with at least one contributor representing less than 20% of total DNA, and all mixtures had at least one contributor with suboptimal DNA … STRmix™ is a breakthrough for forensic analysts as it can assist investigations using DNA evidence that was previously considered too complex to interpret. The software has been developed by New Zealand Crown research institute ESR, with Forensic Science South Australia (FSSA). It has been in use for forensic casework since 2012. 2019-10-26 STRmix™ has undergone both developmental validation, performed by forensic DNA experts who developed the software, as well as an in-house validation, performed by the CFS. Additionally, the software has been implemented for forensic casework in numerous accredited forensic labs throughout North America and in other parts of the world. STRmix™ has been used for routine casework interpretation at ESR and FSSA since August 2012 and is now the Australasian standard for DNA interpretation.
